Finding The information You Need Fast
The internet puts a vast database of information at your fingertips, but the problem is that there is so much information now it is become hard to find the exact information you need. Another huge problem is can you really trust that information? How do you know the person who wrote it actually has the right facts? It doesn’t really matter for most things I agree, if you are trying to find out who starred in a film or what to know what you call a group of zebra then it doesn’t matter if they are wrong. However if you are asking for advice on a problem with your car or something like that then suddenly it becomes much more important.
I find Wikipedia to be a good source of information. I didn’t think it would work as everyone can edit it, but it actually gives some good information on a huge range of diverse topics and I always start my searches there first. However you can’t rely on the information to be accurate or complete as you don’t know who compiled it. That site is only good for finding out facts and information though, if you want to know to do something or how to make something for instance, then you need to try somewhere else.
YouTube is a great source when you want to know how to do something, as often written instructions can be confusing or the author misses off steps which they assume you would know to do. There are sites like Wikihow.com though that give good written instructions on how to do everything from change a tire to bake a turkey, which are well worth checking out.
It is rare that you have to pay for any of this information, most of the time the sites make money from advertisers to cover their expenses, but there are sites like ones who allow you to research your family tree for instance, where you do have to pay. Ancestry.com is a good example of a site you can pay to get information like that from. If you need access to birth, death, marriage and divorce records (which you will to research your family tree) then they can give you that. How much you pay varies from site to site, but usually it is just one monthly fee for access to everything.
Don’t forget about the search engines when you want to find out something, Google is usually able to find what you need. One new thing I have seen Google start to implement is the ability to answer your questions. Normally it just lists websites it thinks will answer your question, but now for simple things like currency conversions it just answers your question. I’d say 90% of the time then just using Google and browsing through a few of the top sites will give you the information you need, but again you need to check the credibility of the site you find the information on. The other 10% of the time then you either need to refine your search to exclude the irrelevant junk that turns up, or turn to large sites like About.com and Wikipedia and use the search function on them instead.
